Yul Brynner
Yul Brynner Anti-Smoking Ad
Now that I'm gone, I tell you...don't smoke.

Yul Brynner made this ad for the American Cancer Society. It was shocking because he allowed it to air only after he died. This was filmed in early 1985, after he found out he had lung cancer. He died in October that year.

Chesterfield Cigarettes

Such an easy taste.

Mmmmm, it's a Chesterfield. Again, building up the delicious taste of these things, as if any cigarette ever tasted good.

Newport Cigarettes
Newport Cigarettes
Newport smokes fresher than any other menthol cigarette.

Without question, Newport consistently had the best jingles on TV.

Tareyton Cigarettes #1
Tareyton Cigarettes #1
A delightful, well choreographed ad that must have also appealed to future consumers (kids).

Newport Cigarettes
Newport Cigarettes #1
Newport filter cigarettes...

As with other cigarette brands, Newport had a knack for coming up with catchy jingles. How many people chose their cigarettes based on those jingles? A lot, I'd bet.

L & M Cigarettes, 1963
L&M Cigarettes, 1963
At manly times like these...

This is one of those ads that, in hindsight, was pure [expletive deleted]. The connection with the future consumer (the kid) is blatant. And then there's the charming, upbeat jingle. I especially like the way both manly men walk out sucking something; it's so grown-up.

Kent Cigarettes
Kent Cigarettes
To a smoker, it's a Kent!

Kent cigarette jingles were among the best ever made. This is one of several using the same theme (with different lyrics). This was also one of the last cigarette ads ever shown on American television.

Oasis Cigarettes
Oasis Cigarettes
Not exactly a household name, Oasis Cigarettes. But a very catchy jingle.

Laughable to see—of all things—water skiers so stylishly lighting up. Can you even imagine how bizarre this would look in real life?

Another Call for Philip Morrr-issss, but this time, in color.

William Talman Anti-Smoking Message
William Talman Anti-Smoking Ad
If you don't smoke, don't start. If you do smoke, quit.

When Bill Talman uttered those words, he was using morphine to ease the pain of lung cancer. This former Perry Mason co-star asked the American Cancer Society if it would help him film this ad. Please watch it. It was first broadcast after Mr. Talman died.

David McLean
Marlboro (cancer victim)
Come to where the flavor is...

This is a difficult ad to share, but it's the famous one. The first man lighting up, David McLean, greatly suffered due to his smoking (lung cancer that spread to his brain and spine). His survivors sued the industry...for making smoking so addictive and attractive.

Another Winston ad, but with a bonus: swanky sophistication.

This one relied mostly on cool lounge music, without clever lyrics. And dig that neato dress she's wearing.
