June Lockhart
Franco American with June Lockhart, 1960
The sauce is everything...

For six years, June Lockhart was Ruth "Mom" Martin on the long-running series, Lassie.

Here she is pitching canned macaroni and cheese for one of the show's sponsors.

Chicken of the Sea
Chicken of the Sea, 1973
Ask any mermaid you happen to see...

Long standing and familiar jingle for the Chicken of the Sea label.

The black chef in this ad looks and sounds a lot like film star, Ernie Hudson, who later co-starred in the Ghostbusters movies. We can't confirm if this was him, but in other similar ads (with close-ups), it sure seems like him.

Smothers Brothers
Smothers Brothers for Beech-Nut Gum, 196?
He is Dick and I am Tom and we are selling chewing GOM...

We're not sure of the air-date on this one, but judging from the skinny ties, it must have been in the early 1960s.

Straight-man Dick and silly Tom would go on, later in the 1960s, to create a politically-charged musical-comedy variety show that unseated the giant Bonanza as the top-rated show.

Green Giant
Green Giant, 1963
Good things from the garden, garden in the valley...

If you watch this ad all the way through, you will eventually hear the entire Green Giant jingle that was famous throughout the 1960s, complete with retro-sounding chorus.

These fanciful ads were among the best of the era. They were probably shot in color, but we could find only this black-and-white version.

Campbell's Scotch Broth
Campbell's Scotch Broth, 1960
The Campbells are coming, hurrah, hurrah...

Featuring the Campbell's Kids animated characters, popular in the early 1960s.

According to a reviewer on Amazon, Campbell's discontinued Scotch Broth in 2010, because it was too expensive to the corporation. According to the same reviewer, it was still available in Canada. We did a quick search on the Campbell's of Canada site and could not find this soup.

Special K
Special K, 1969
Jennifer, what a darling maternity dress...oh, you're not?...

Probably one of the cattiest TV ads ever presented on the tube, it's also still one of the funniest.

The viewer-as-Jennifer sees and hears the insults and phoniness around her.

Blue Bonnet
Blue Bonnet, 1966
Everything's better with Blue Bonnet on it.

Very famous jingle for Blue Bonnet margarine.

Apparently, this ad was made before "soft" margarine in a tub became the standard. Instead, there was regular stick margarine, and whipped margarine...still in a hard stick, but bigger.

Rice Krispies
Rice Krispies, 1953
...oven roasted tumble toasted...

Unbelievably retro, corny ad, complete with outer space theme.

The lip-lickin' kid near the end is the icing on the cake in this seriously '50s ad.

Honeycomb
Post Honeycomb Cereal, 196?
Enjoy the eatin' treat called Honeycomb...

Probably one of the most famous cereal jingles ever, directly from the 1950s hit by Jimmie Rodgers.

Most of the ads we've seen with this jingle contain the shorter version. This ad is the full-length version.

Kellogg's
Kellogg's, 1959
Kellogg's best to you...

Very brief but famous jingle often broadcast at the end of sponsored TV shows.

The music starts out a little wobbly on this one, but it was the best we could find.

Dairy Queen
Dairy Queen, 195?

Another unbelievably corny ad from what appears to be the early 1950s.

Nothing like having your toddlers taken away in the dark of the night...to the milkshake way.

Ice Cream
Ice Cream, 1963
It's a recipe book for...ICE CREAM!

Generic ad for ice cream, but really brought to us by the American Dairy Association, back in the early 1960s.

The bongo-beat music in the jingle was very popular during this period, just before the British invasion would forever change our musical preferences.

Fluffo
Fluffo, 1960
Heavenly digestible fried chicken..

Do not watch this ad if you are offended by the obnoxious attitudes toward women in the 1960s.

What exactly is so "digestible" about chicken-with-skin swimming in hot grease? Smart bride he's got there...

Rice Krispies
Rice Krispies, 1969
It's going to be a rice day....

The jingle in this ad is a fitting introduction to The Seventies, the decade of polyester, wide ties, earth tones, elevator music, wholesomeness, and just plain blah.

Have a happy day!

Chef Boy-Ar-Dee, 1953
Chef Boy-Ar-Dee, 1953
A dinner that only costs about 15 cents a serving.

Well, here's the real Chef Boy-Ar-Dee, circa 1953, otherwise known as Ettore (Hector) Boiardi.

Interesting that he pronounces his name boy-AR-dee, yet in later ads, the middle syllable was not accented. Boiardi got his start working at the famous Plaza Hotel, in New York City.
