Sunsweet Prunes, 1967
I'll warn you in advance: I'm not going to like your prune.
One of the most successful ads of all time, this one proved that the soft-sell can be effective.
Prunes had a solid, time-honored reputation of being old-people food, to relieve their constipation. Sunsweet almost didn't air this ad, because it feared that the angle, "Try it you might not like it...if not, that's okay", would flop.
Not only did it NOT flop, the ad (and the campaign to reduce prune wrinkles) was a well-deserved smash hit.

Rice Krispies
I say it's crackle, the crispy sound...
We think this is likely a 1960s ad, although we're not sure.
What a catchy jingle in this one, with the trio of Kelloggs' elves at their musical best.

Post Cereals
Most any cereal is fine with me...
Catchy little jingle that aired during the Danny Thomas Show/Make Room for Daddy in the early 1960s. Each character in this ad represented one of the characters in the show.
Post and Kellogg's seemed to sponsor all of the wholesome family sitcoms in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Kellogg's usually had the better jingles, but this one by Post, although long forgotten, was one of its best.

Kellogg's Special K with Dennis James
My mother's favorite performer...
Dennis James, host of many '40s through '70s daytime game shows, was also the distinctive voice for Kellogg's.
Special K was always associated with low calories and diet food, but here the accent is on "protein".

Bert Lahr (Cowardly Lion) for Lays Potato Chips
Bet'choo can't eat just one!
So hard to find, but I finally got this one featuring Bert Lahr, the Cowardly Lion from the Wizard of Oz. Back in the 1960s, Lahr was the extremely effective spokesperson for Lays Potato Chips.
Lahr created several ads for Frito-Lay...and they're all difficult to find.

Lipton Chicken Noodle Soup
Lipton noodle soup starts out with a great big chicken.
When the non-piano music starts in this dull ad (an oboe?), it appears Lipton took the first three notes from the Campbell's "Mmm-mmm, good!" jingle, thus borrowing instant association with wholesomeness and goodness.

Phil Hartman, 1948 - 1998
As Huge MacAttack, for McDonald's.
Featured on ClassicTVAds in 2005, Phil Hartman returns in another great ad featuring this talented Saturday Night Live comedian. Hartman was murdered by his spouse, in his sleep.

Campbell's Soup and Sandwich
Any time or weather, soup and sandwich go together.
Very famous Campbell's soup jingle, a spinoff of Love and Marriage.
Campbell's always seemed to score with one famous jingle or theme after another. The "soup and sandwich" theme was a long-lasting one.

Eat something!
Elusive commercial with Keith Olbermann when he was a sports anchor at ESPN.
Apparently, this ad and another spoofed designer cologne ads at the time, which featured skinny, gaunt-looking models.

Crisco, 196?
Who's the best cook in Greeley Country Kansas...
We're not sure which product saw increased sales after this ad aired nation-wide: Crisco, or fashionable eye-glasses.
The acting in this ad doesn't get any better. They were aiming for everyday folk...mission accomplished.
We like the daughter's glasses the best, because they have that pretty feminine uplift from the center outward.

Campbell's Pork and Beans
Beans of all our dreams...
Does anybody know what "tender-hearted beans" really means? Did you call them tender-farted beans, too?
Campbell's was always the sponsor of tender-hearted television shows, like Lassie and Donna Reed. Kids, like the ones in this ad, were usually the focus...and they weren't very good at lip-sync'ing.

Aunt Jemima (Harriet Nelson) (1955)
Make mine buckwheat, mom...
This ad, we're sure, was intended to conjour mental images of the Old South and Gone With the Wind, complete with Mammy on the box of pancake mix.
In hindsight, we can certainly see why they changed the image of Aunt Jemima. The insulting "fat, smiling, po' but happy" negro image held up by the rich white woman was unbelievably stereotypical and racist.

Yeah, get a load of Popeye's summer jugs, sexual innuendo intentional (I'm sure). This is truly drive-in quality, with a very goofy Ellen Degenerese at the end.
