Wonder Bread
Wonder Bread
Made from batter, not dough.

Finally, a bread that has a decided lack of holes. Just what we needed...right?

Campbell's Pork & Beans
Campbell's Pork & Beans
Tender-hearted beans.

Are they still called tender hearted? Campbell's usually sponsored the wholesome shows back in the '50s and '60s, like Donna Reed and Lassie.

Jell-O Instant Pudding
Jell-O Instant Pudding, 1953
Shake-a-pudding, shake-a-pudding, shake-a-pudding, SHAKE-A!

It's not the pudding...it's the kids. This is almost as annoying as the old Wisk "ring around the collar" ad that made us choke.

Swanson's
Swanson's TV Dinners
Swanson's Three-Course Dinners

Such luxury, to have a delicious three-course dinner, complete with (Campbell's) soup and dessert. The peas, of course, were fed to the garbage disposal.

Look good? Want some?

I swear, these vintage Pillsbury ads were simply the best. That jingle must have made them a fortune.

Sal Hepatica Laxative
Sal Hepatica Laxative
There will always be mornings like this.

Sal WHATica?...I don't think this is around anymore. Everybody was probably asking for Sal Mineo's laxative.

Stereotypical, 1950s big-bruiser dad is ready to punch out everybody just because he's a little plugged up.

From Kurt: This product started in the 1910s! Its popularity was good for awhile; it also was featured on Fred Allen's program. It was recommended by doctors at the time for colds and the like. A saline laxative, it was a popular item at the time, as with Ipana toothpaste.

Campbell's Soup
Campbell's Soup
Soup this good just has to be Campbell's...

Gifted journalist, Katie, grates on your nerves with her squeaky voice in this odd ad.

Stick with it to the end, and you'll hear an early, famous Campbell's jingle.

Campbell's Soup
Campbell's Soup
Have you had your soup today?

I watched this ad recently, and–honest to God–it prompted me to open a can of Campbell's Mushroom Soup and have it for dinner.

Campbell's really ought to pay me for this free testimonial...don't you think?

Wendy's Where's the Beef?
Wendy's Where's the Beef?
I don't think there's anybody back there!

These three old ladies made Wendys a household name, and the line, Where's the beef, became an Americanism for many years to follow.

Clara Peller, the lovable, grouchy complainer in this ad, died in 1987 at the age of 84.

Wrigley's Spearmint Gum
Hi, ho, hey, hey, chew your little troubles away...

I don't know the year this came out. It seems like the '50s, but because it's in color, it might be the '60s. Retro jingle.

Pepperidge Farm
Pepperidge Farm
Best tastin' turnovers you ever 'et.

I know, the Pepperidge Farm guy was supposed to conjure images of the typical Vermonter. But he always sounded like his teeth would fall out any second.

The Pepperdige Farm deliveryman character was launched in 1956. In the beginning, the character's name was Titus Moody; later, he was known as Old Timer. It was one of the longest running ad campaigns in the history of TV, ending in the early 1990s. (Thanks to Ed in Culver City for the tip.)
