Bonus Detergent, 1967
Bonus?!...roses?!...roses...look roses, beautiful roses!!
The gorgeous desert rose towel came inside boxes of Bonus Detergent.
Judging from the excited reactions of the ladies present, these towels and Bonus Detergent were smash hits...er, for awhile. Alas, Bonus is no more...and neither are the towels.

Fab Detergent (1955)
Use FAB (use Fab in your washing machine)...
(The horrible audio quality was improved in this clip May 25.)
Totally '50s ad with early, slow rock-n-roll beat. Starts out on a very strange note, though.

Trend Liquid (1957)
It's your money-saving friend...Trend!
This one is a laugh-riot, as the smart shopper gleefully dances her way to the liquid detergent aisle.
Yes, boys and girls, back in the 1950s, all of our mothers joyfully danced in the supermarkets...so much money to save, and so many thrilling products from which to choose!

Mr. Clean
While all this really needed was Mr. Cleaning.
Rather far-fetched claims in this one.
Back in '64, paint was commonly oil-based. Yet look at how, after a "Mr. Cleaning", the paint just melts away from the corroded brush. Fudge anyone?

Fab Detergent, 1952
That's just like a man.
This aired back in the days when there was one 1-1/2-minute commercial. Notice the guy's shirt at the end...it looks like he's been irradiated (nuclear glow?).

Blue Dutch Cleanser
The cleanser with the magic touch!
Very vintage retro ad from the '50s, complete with dancing, prancing little Dutch girl with the sparkly wand. A great retro ad.

Mr. Clean
Mr. Clean gets rid of dirt and grime and grease in just a minute...
This ad is from the 1950s, and Clean is wearing a ring in his left ear. In those days, it would be shocking for normal men to do this, yet Clean got away with it. Disgusting.

You'll look better in a sweater washed in Woolite.
Perhaps we did look better in sweaters washed in Woolite.
But we think it helped if the sweaters were form-fitting and the people wearing them had bustlines that were big, pointy, and sassy. Or maybe it was just the Woolite.

Lemon Pledge, 1969
Lemon Pledge very pretty, put the shine down, lemon good...
Using the tune, Lemon Tree (made famous by Peter, Paul, and Mary), Johnson & Johnson gained instant, lasting product recognition when this ad first aired.
Many people still forget that the opening lyric to the song is "Lemon tree...", not "Lemon Pledge..."

Top Job (1963)
I'll have to wash the whole wall...and I bet it'll streak.
And in the 1960s, the way to a housekeeper's heart was a product that didn't streak walls.
I don't know about you, but if my brothers and I left that kind of mess on a wall, my mom would've beat the crap out of us and then made us clean it up until it sparkled.

Bold Detergent (1966)
Now Millie, don't be silly...
In the 1960s, when musicals were all the rage, Bold Detergent launched a series of ads that were...mini-musicals.
Looking back, these ads seem like such nonsense. Mostly women singing to other women, stereotypical gender roles...ugh, such schlock, in hindsight. Oh, and BTW: The terrible lip-sync'ing is not CTV's fault...it aired that way.
